A traves de la vida del canciller Pero Lopez de Ayala, que discurre a caballo entre el siglo XIV y XV bien puede estudiarse la historia y la literatura de este periodo de transicion. Su Libro rimado de palacio es un largo poema en cuaderna via, tipico del XIV, en el cual adopta un tono censor al pintar la sociedad corrupta de su epoca. En la segunda parte demuestra un acusado caracter lugubre y fatalista, de fuentes biblicas y gregorianas, que bien puede ser sintoma del final de un siglo.
